If you have been playing poker for very long, you have probably at least heard of the phrase ‘poker odds.’ If you haven’t then you will eventually and probably sooner rather than later. Understanding how to calculate poker pot odds is extremely important and a skill that you will definitely need if you want to become a competitive poker player. Sure, if you are only going to play poker occasionally and with opponents who aren’t very good, then you may forgo this lesson. However, if you value your money, no matter how much skill you lack, I suggest that you don’t. Calculating poker pot odds is easier then you probably think. Many people have a unsubstantiated fear about it, simply because it requires the use of mathematics.

When figuring out your poker pot odds, you will need to determine how many cards are present in the deck which would make your hand. To do this, figure out how many cards still in the deck would allow you to complete your hand. After you have determined this, you need to multiply this number by 4. The number you get will be the percentage for the flop. You’re not quite finished yet. Next, multiply that number by 2. This figure will give you the percentage estimate from the turn. This formula also works great for the river card. Your aim is to be on the look-out for 1:1 odds. When your odds are 1:1 You have a good chance of winning the hand.
Your pot odds help you determine the probability that you will win the pot or the game. The pot is the amount of money up for grabs. If you have a good chance of winning you will want to proceed. If you do not, you will probably want to fold and give things ago the next game.
