Custom Poker Tables Profile: Howard Lederer

A wise man once told me, “Those who can, do, and those who cannot, teach”. I think the ammendment to this adage needs to explain that those who want to grow up to be teachers, also do. The point we are trying to make here at Custom Poker Tables refers to a poker professional simply known by his peers as, The Professor. Acclaimed poker instructor, television analyst, and poker player himself, Howard Lederer has made a fortune teaching others to make a fortune; playing poker. As of 2008 his total live tournament winnings exceeded $4,800,000, but the live tournament winnings of his students greatly exceed his totals.

Lederer is known as “The Poker Professor” because of his analytical style and long history of wins. Lederer is also known for his focused, calm demeanor at the poker table and stated he has applied zen wisdom to his poker playing. He has made an instructional poker video called Secrets of No Limit Hold’em and he runs the Howard Lederer Poker Fantasy Camp. He also co-hosts Poker Superstars and Learn from the Pros for the Fox Broadcasting Company.

Howard H. Lederer (born October 30, 1964 in Concord, New Hampshire) is the brother of poker professional Annie Duke. Lederer, like many other poker stars, was a young chess talent and after high school he moved to New York City where he attended Columbia University. New York City is known for its chess clubs, notably the Marshall Chess Club and Manhattan Chess Club where he played, and at one of these clubs he discovered poker being played in the back room and quickly became hooked. Eventually, he settled in playing long days and nights at the Mayfair Club with other well-known poker players such as Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington. So far he has won two World Series of Poker bracelets and two World Poker Tour titles. In 2008, he won 1.25 million Australian dollars by winning the $100,000 No Limit Holdem Challenge, billed as the world’s most expensive tournament buy-in, at the Aussie Millions. He currently resides in Las Vegas with his wife Suzie, son Mattias, and three dogs.

Lederer is one of the founders, co-owners and CEOs of “Tiltware Inc”, the owners and creators of Full Tilt Poker, along with Ray Bitar. Since the passage of the UIGEA, Tiltware renamed itself to “Pocket Kings” and relocated to Ireland.
