Poker Player Profile: Hoyt Corkins
Hoyt Corkins, AKA, ‘Cowboy’ is a well known, professional poker player. His moniker, ‘Cowboy’, was given to him because of his birthplace, Alabama and due to the fact that he owns nearly 60 heads of cattle. Hoyt has been playing poker for sometime (he’s actually had two pro careers) and is the owner of several prestigious titles.
Hoyt first begin participating in poker games as a young teen. His father played poker and would host games at his home. When Corkins was able to sit in on those games, he would. Not only did he learn how to play the game but he also picked up several playing traits from his father which would serve him well during his career, namely fearlessness.
Corkins began to play professionally in 1989. However, his initial stint as a pro would last only three short years. He would quit in 1992. This came as a bit of a surprise because in 1992, the year he walked away from the game, he won a WSOP (World Series of Poker) Bracelet in the $5000 Pot Limit Omaha event. However, personal, not poker problems would demand that he take a break from the game. He was going through a divorce. Later, another woman, his fiancée, would again play a part in his career as a professional poker player.
Eleven years later, in 2003, Hoyt Corkins would return to poker, in large part due to his fiancée’s insistence. He didn’t waste anytime repeating his earlier success. He won the WPT (World Poker Tour) 2003 World Poker Finals event his first year gack. For his excellent play, he won $1,089,200. He would continue to excel, proving that this win was no beginner’s luck, though he wasn’t actually a beginner. One year later, in 2004, he came in second place at the PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure. In 2005, he finished in second place at the WSOP Tournament of Champions. Today, Corkins is sponsored by PokerStars. He can be found playing there under the screen name, Easy H.
