Poker is a game of skill. Not only must a person know and understand the various rules of the game, strategies and the like, they must also be at least pretty decent in math. Those individuals that claim that poker is a game of luck, have likely never played. The fact that a person has to perform mathematical equations in their head should be enough to put that theory to rest. One of the most important calculations that a person will have to make are poker outs. Being able to calculate poker outs, is necessary when calculating pot odds, another skill that poker players need to have. Below, we will show you how to properly calculate poker outs.

A poker out is any card that shows up on the turn or river which will improve a player’s hand. For example, it might be a card that would help an individual complete a flush draw or straight. It is crucial that players have a good understanding of outs because it is a key part of the game when an individual is attempting to decide whether or not to draw a big hand, if they are not playing extremely well.

Calculating an out is pretty simple. A player needs to determine who many cards are out there (in the deck) which could improve his or her hand. For example, if an individual had 4 to a flush, in a deck with 13 cards in every suit, there would be a total of 9 cards that would improve a player’s hand. After an individual determines their outs, they can then go on to calculate their poker odds. We won’t go into that here. It is beyond the scope of this particular article. If you would like information on how to calculate pot odds, you will be able to find a great deal of information about how to do so online.

One of the best things about the game of poker is its versatility. If a person prefers, they can play alone on their home computer or at a casino on a video poker machine. Those individuals that are more social might prefer to play poker with other people. Again, this can be done online or also in a casino. Another option is a home poker game.

A good home poker game can be lots of fun. Not only does throwing such a party make it possible to get together with ones friends but it also presents an opportunity to make some money, that is, if you decide to play for real cash. If you think throwing a poker game sounds like fun, the first thing that you will want to do is get organized. If you fail to do so, the game will likely turn into a disaster. To avoid that, take heed to the following advice.

It is tough to throw together a good poker game without food and drinks, so don’t do try. Go ahead and decide what types of food and drinks you might want to serve. However, don’t go shopping yet. Before you do that, you will need to determine how many people will be attending. Make a list. Once you have done so, contact everyone. Today, you can do that numerous ways. You can make a few phone calls, send an email or a text. After you have a firm count you can start to shop for supplies.

The format of your game will determine exactly what you need to buy. If you are planning a tournament style games, then you may need more decks of cards and sets of chips then if everyone was playing in one game.

After you have made decisions about game format and have a RSVP list, you are ready to hit the stores. You will need to purchase the food, drinks and supplies needed for the game.

A home poker party can be a lot of fun. As long as you plan before hand and are organized, you will be able to enjoy your company and hopefully get in a few games of poker because everything has been thought out and taken care of before you guests arrived.

Though a healthy amount of skill and an effective strategy will keep you competitive on the poker felts, there are always hidden dangers or traps, lurking and waiting to trip you up and take you under. Because the game of poker has been around for so long, many of the most common traps have been identified. We won’t discuss every one of them in this article. But we will take a look at a few.

The Rut: This is a trap that every poker player falls into, regardless of their skill level, amount of experience and previous successes. There will come a time when you receive a series of bad hands. Before you know it, you will find yourself in a rut and not know how to get out it. Rest assured, it won’t last forever, but you do need to know how to handle it.

Attempting To Play Your Way Out of The Rut: Even worse then hitting a rut is throwing away good money after bad trying to play your way out of it. Sometimes quitters do win. If things are going bad and your best efforts haven’t stopped the bleeding, you need back away from the table (or computer) and call it a day.

Trapping Oneself: Sometimes, a poker player is their own worst enemy. Trapping oneself is caused by poor hand selection. This is often a trap most experienced by new poker players and those who haven’t played a lot. To avoid trapping oneself, a proper knowledge or hand ranking is important. Players need to be able to recognize which hands beat others. This will make it possible for them to make better hand selections.

Playing Flops Too Aggressively: Some players, without being sure, will flop with a relatively weak hand. Flop play must be approached with care. Going for it too soon can backfire.

Whether or not poker is a game of skill has been an ongoing debate. Proponents for legalizing online gambling contend that it is skill, while opponents of such legalization like to claim that it isn’t. This debate has become more then a private or in-house one. Court cases have hinged on whether or not a judge determines based on the evidence whether the game of poker requires skill or simply luck. My personal opinion is that poker is a game of skill. Ask anyone who has ever played. It takes a considerable amount of ability to play. This isn’t simply pushing a button or pulling a lever like in slots. Poker is a thinking mans (or woman’s) game and the person who has the higher thought processes wins. Below, we will discuss three reasons why pokers should be classified as one that requires skill.

a. It requires strategy to win: Successful poker play over the long term requires some sort of strategy. Games of skill do not. When a person, for example, plays slots, any strategy they utilize is ineffective, contrary to the advice given out by individuals hoping to make a few bucks by convincing you otherwise.

b. Unskilled players are more likely to fail: Unskilled players will typically lose to more skilled ones. Games of luck are not influenced by the ability of the participants.

c. Individuals can increase their chances of winning: When a game is solely based on luck, nothing can be done to increase or decrease ones odds. Whether or not a person wins is totally dependent on chance. This is not the case as it concerns poker.

Is poker a game of skill? Sure it is. Poker requires that those who play it have a strategy. Whether or not they do, combined with their personal level will have an effect on the game’s outcome. Games of luck or chance don’t require by any of the aforementioned, nor are they affected by them, i.e., strategy and skill.

San Jose is the third largest city in the state of California, and the tenth largest in the country. As of 2008 just over 948,000 people called San Jose home. Located near the south edge of the San Francisco Bay area, San Jose was once known for it’s farming. Founded back in 1777, the city was the first town in a Spanish colony. Currently, San Jose has one of the highest costs of living in the country. The city has over 35% of all the venture capital funds in the United States. With those reasons, and others, the city is experiencing a boom in citizens enjoying the game of poker.

Popular Casinos

Although lumped in with other bay cities such as San Francisco and Oakland, San Jose boasts several top notch casinos. These casinos offer various levels of competition, along with varying buy-in minimums and maximum’s, along with blinds. Bay 101 in San Jose hosts a tournament each year called the Shooting Star. For this tournament, they bring in a professional poker player, and players seek to eliminate them from the tournament. Bay 101 holds regular tournaments of the $100/$200 level. They have a featured tournament daily. Garden City Casino is just seven miles down the road from Bay 101 and also has varying games. They also feature a daily tournament, with varying pay-outs.

Professional Players

Humberto Brenes lives in San Jose, and has been a regular in the game of poker since 1994. Brenes has not been heard from much since the early 90’s, but the Shark has two WSOP bracelets. Chantel Mcnulty is not just a poker player, but also an online favorite as a “poker babe”. Possibly known better for her good looks, Mcnulty, 25 years old, has pictures all over the internet, but has also been known to compete well in poker tournaments.

Grinding, as it relates to poker, can have different meanings. The definition is subject to change based on who you are talking to. For the purpose of this article, we will define grinding as playing a substantial amount of poker. Grinders put in long hours and approach the game like they would a traditional 9 to 5 job. A person who is grinding is a high volume player who participates in lots of games on a daily basis.

Successful grinders typically do pretty well financially, often earning thousands of dollars per month. Grinding, like any other poker strategy, is a bit of an art form. Simply logging in long hours isn’t enough. Below, we will take a look at how to go about this so that individuals give themselves a good shot at being successful.

To grind successfully, a player needs to have an effective bankroll management strategy and adhere to it. Playing games and making bets off of ones gut or emotion is never a great idea and is a good way to burn through ones bankroll and have nothing to show for it. This should be avoided at all cost.

Picking the right online casino or poker room to play at is also very important. Grinders should look for those with weak competition, i.e., lots of fish. These players are often inexperienced or just plain bad. A lot of a grinder’s money will be won going against these types of players.

Keeping ones game sharp is also important. Players can accomplish this by reading books on poker or visiting poker related websites and blogs which offer good, informative advice. Even though experience gained through playing is a great way to improve ones skill set and learn the game, sometimes it is necessary to go back to school, so to speak. Ongoing education in the area case poker, is especially important for those who wish to utilize a grinding strategy since they will be spending so much time playing the sport and likely will be depending on the money they earn to support themselves.

Any person who has played poker for any length of time understands the importance of position. Most professionals, and those who give advice on such things, always relay how ones seat (whether live or virtual) at the table effects their play (or at least it should) and influences a player’s decisions. Individuals who go later in a round have the benefit of seeing what choices the people ahead of them made. Players who go early in a round must make decisions without knowing how the players whose turn comes after there’s will react. Unfortunately, there will be times when a player is not seated at an optimal spot at the table. When this occurs, individuals have to do the best that they can and come up with an effective strategy, based on where they’re positioned at the table. In this article, we will take a look at raising out of position in a poker game, particularly how a player can use this action to their advantage.

Raising out of position allows individuals to put the pressure on the other players. This helps to take some measure of control over the post flop hand, it also gives the individual who does so, a chance to take the pot.

Some poker players do quite nicely by raising out of position. Doing so allows them to thin out of the competition. Weak players who scare easily are likely to fold right away. When raising from out of position, a player should raise enough to cause the other players at the table to worry, but not too much that it doesn’t make sense. Some professionals suggest that such players should raise their bet by the same amount that they would if they had a big hand. This helps convince the other players that they indeed have a strong hand, and hopefully intimidates them into folding. If a person only raises a small amount, no one is going to be convinced that they are a real threat.

Raising out of position is a great way to be aggressive. While this is can occasionally be a good move, it is very important and necessary that a person act wisely or it can back fire.

Phoenix, Arizona is well known for their warm weather. They have the hottest climate of any city within the United States. What they have not been known for is their excellent poker, which has been brought about in the last few years. Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the United States, with nearly 1.5 million people. Phoenix became a city in 1881 after being founded in 1868, near the Salt Lake. The city is home to seven Fortune 1000 companies, including Avnet, Allied Waste and Pinnacle West.

Popular Casinos

Casino’s in a city like Phoenix are sometimes used for a cooling down area. While this certainly is true, and continues today – the people of Phoenix are not afraid to spend some money while cooling down. The temperatures are not the only thing that is up all year – the wagers at many of the fine establishments continue to increase. There are several casino’s that operate around the Phoenix area: Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort, Magical Options, Gila River Casinos, Fort McDowell Casino, Casino Club and Bingo West of Arizona.

Professional Players

The city of Phoenix enjoys many top poker players, but three that represent such a great city so well are Johnny Chan and Mike Wattel. While not originally from Phoenix, Johnny Chan moved over from Hong Kong in 1962 to reside in Phoenix. Chan became the first Asian to play against many. In 1987 and 1988 he won the Championship Event of WSOP. Wattel started playing poker with his friends, and was so successful, he became a professional. His first real success came in 1999 when he entered the WSOP $1500 Omaha eight-or-better tournament and won his first bracelet. His total earnings within the game of poker sit at over $1 million. Lastly, Tom Schneider calls Phoenix home, and is not only a poker player, but a CPA, and has published his own book. Schneider did not start playing professional poker until age 2002. At that time, he was 43 years old.
