How to control tilt in poker?

Tilt in poker occurs when players act in ways they would not normally because they are playing off of emotion, usually negative ones. It is normal for individuals to get upset when playing poker. They may get mad, irritated, frustrated and the like. When a person allows these types of emotions to control their play, sometimes they end up playing themselves into losses. Good players have learned to play with discipline. This not includes not only how they manage their bankroll but their emotions, which will often affect how a person manages their bets (i.e., money).

Tilting is never a good thing. It costs people money, influences them to burn through their bankroll and make rash decisions. To control tilt, individuals should play within certain guidelines. While these won’t totally eliminate the possibility of tilt, it will make it less likely. They include proper bankroll management, sitting out of games when a person has become too emotional and limiting the amount of drinks consumed when playing.

Proper Bankroll Management: When a person has already set clear guidelines regarding how they will manage their bankroll, it is less likely that they will make bets based on emotion. They might. However, if they are disciplined in how they deal with their money, they may better be able to pass on an emotional wager.

Sitting Out Games: While most poker players don’t want to miss any action, sometimes it is necessary when a person has become too emotional or upset. Strong emotions can be a player’s biggest foe. They can influence them to take actions that they wouldn’t normally and thus, cost them money.

Limit Alcohol Intake: Alcohol can have a negative impact on ones poker game. Suddenly, a person is not thinking as clearly and their emotions can very easily get the best of them. Individuals that are drunk don’t necessarily make the best poker players and put themselves at risk of playing with tilt. If a person cannot control their liquor or it causes them to become emotional, they should avoid drinking while playing.
